The Japanese government is considering a proposal to establish a fund to encourage local universities and institutes to play a more significant role in the indigenous development of military technologies.

A spokesperson from the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) confirmed to IHS Jane’child 28 August that the proposition was tabled in a MoD meeting that occurred in June. He added, however, that the size of the fund had not yet been established considering that the Financial year 2015 (FY15) protection budget plan is still based on “eleventh hour co-ordination”.

The MoD proposal seeks to strengthen co-operation between defence agencies and research institutes and universities in developing defence technologies.
